Abstract This chapter defines self-determination as the ability to understand one’s strengths and weaknesses, set personal goals, and take deliberate action to achieve them. It emphasizes that self-determination fosters independence and empowerment by enabling young autistic adults (YAAs) to make informed decisions, exercise their rights, and access appropriate supports in education, work, and daily life. The chapter explains self-advocacy as the capacity to communicate needs, seek help, negotiate effectively, and express personal experiences to reduce distress and strengthen autonomy. It integrates practical exercises, real-life scenarios, and skill-building strategies to guide YAAs in applying these principles during their transition to adulthood. Finally, the chapter underscores that self-advocacy develops through personal initiative and the support of friends, professionals, and coaches who help YAAs assert their rights and build lasting self-reliance.
