Abstract This chapter introduces the concept of balancing independence and support, which guides young autistic adults in identifying and strengthening developmentally appropriate skills for independence while recognizing the ongoing need for support systems. It outlines objectives such as discussing readiness, identifying skills for improvement, and understanding appropriate help-seeking, supported by worksheets and handouts on skill development, self-advocacy, and community resources. The chapter reviews prior self-advocacy practice and emphasizes that independence is a gradual, individualized process across life domains, including finances, self-care, relationships, and mobility. Through a structured gap analysis, clients assess current abilities, identify obstacles, and develop actionable steps that incorporate planning, practice, and progress monitoring. Finally, the chapter underscores the importance of using available services, support, and legal accommodations while fostering self-advocacy, responsible help-seeking, and the gradual reduction of external reliance to achieve sustainable independence.
