Abstract This chapter focuses on developing self-advocacy as an essential element of self-determination, guiding the young autistic adult (YAA) to recognize when and how to assert personal needs appropriately. It explains that self-advocacy involves communicating one’s needs clearly, identifying obstacles that hinder self-expression, and maintaining awareness of social boundaries while engaging in assertive behavior. The chapter encourages YAAs to practice speaking up and voicing concerns respectfully and confidently across various contexts. It also outlines how mentors or supporters assist by discussing the meaning of self-determination, engaging in role-plays to model assertive communication, and reviewing practical tools that reinforce these skills. Finally, the chapter emphasizes that genuine self-determination arises from understanding one’s needs and possessing the confidence and competence to advocate for them effectively.
