Abstract This chapter outlines the legal, practical, and skill-based steps that support young autistic adults (YAAs) as they transition toward greater independence. It explains how legal responsibilities shift at age 18, highlighting options such as power of attorney, guardianship, and conservatorship to ensure appropriate decision-making support. The chapter discusses the Americans With Disabilities Act and emphasizes the importance of preparing YAAs through structured discussions on living arrangements, financial management, transportation, personal care, and daily living skills. It promotes learning in real-world settings, encourages natural consequences, and underscores the value of consistent practice to build competence and confidence. Finally, the chapter offers practical coaching strategies, external resources, and structured exercises that help families and YAAs set realistic goals, strengthen self-reliance, and foster meaningful independence.
