Abstract This chapter introduces the STEPS curriculum, a semi-structured program that supports adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder in developing independence through a cognitive-behavioral approach focused on self-knowledge, self-determination, and self-regulation. It explains that providers adapt the program flexibly while maintaining fidelity to its goals and outline strategies for addressing each domain through activities that strengthen self-awareness, advocacy, and emotional regulation. The chapter outlines the structure of STEPS, which comprises 12 modules, four to six check-ins, and two immersion experiences, designed to promote the application of real-life skills. It highlights the coach’s role—typically a parent or caregiver—in motivating and guiding the client using the Coach Workbook, which complements the Provider Manual. Finally, the chapter presents general guidelines for implementing STEPS effectively, emphasizing individualized pacing, collaboration with coaches, time management, and a strength-based approach that fosters sustained progress toward independence.
