PhD holders’ careers are more diverse than ever, including hybrid careers in which the PhD holder works simultaneously in and outside academia. Yet there is little knowledge about the experiences of PhD holders transitioning to hybrid careers. This chapter explores PhD holders’ motives, experiences, and satisfaction for and with hybrid careers using secondary empirical data from four research studies conducted across 11 European countries using surveys and interviews. While these PhD holders generally experience high levels of satisfaction, hybrid career profiles exhibit the complex interplay motives and satisfaction. Implications for researcher education, career development services, and future research are identified.
