Research has examined skills developed through doctoral education and the challenges PhD graduates experience in transitioning from academia to other sectors; however, preparation for diverse careers has received less attention from a policy perspective. This chapter applies a policy framework lens and examines institutional documents on transitions to diverse careers at the European, national, and university levels in five countries. Our findings suggest that formal components of career development at the doctoral level must include reflection on dissertation modalities, recognition of specific career development needs of graduates from humanities and social sciences, and involvement of different stakeholders at all institutional levels.
