The design methodology for any AUV starts with identifying and analysing mission requirements, followed by examining alternative concepts to satisfy those requirements, and thereafter the definition of components and analysis of the vehicle performance. Salient aspects and considerations for underwater vehicle design are introduced, such as hydrodynamics, structures, hull form, propulsion, navigation systems, sensors, and autonomy and control systems. This chapter outlines different approaches for designing an AUV in qualitative terms, drawing upon practices for product design, submarine design, and systems engineering. Standards and certification are important for underwater vehicles for industrial use, and the applicable codes, standards, and interoperability protocols are discussed.
