The development of UUVs since the mid-20th century has been boosted by computing capability, compact components, and data processing power. However, the very nature of the underwater environment poses challenges for the effectiveness of underwater surveys. UUVs are broadly categorised into autonomous and remotely operated vehicles, depending on whether or not they have a physical umbilical connected to their control vessel. The main components of uncrewed underwater vehicles are introduced. UUVs are employed for a variety of scientific, industrial and defence applications, many of which utilise common technologies.
