Training and Developing the Support Team in Cage Wash Operations

The need for training in the laboratory animal facility was established decades ago. Programs have been presented by many organizations, including the IAT (beginning in 1949) and AALAS (in 1950) for animal care providers, ACLAM (in 1957) for veterinarians, LAMA (in 1984) for managers, and LAWTE (in 1994) for trainers ( Kennedy, 2015 ). However, the focus has largely been on developing the theoretical and technical knowledge of those working directly with the animals in order improve animal care and well-being. This chapter presents a compilation of training topics addressed to the needs and concerns of those persons engaged primarily in cage washing operations, who provide support services to laboratory animal facilities. Trainers will find suggestions for curriculum, learning evaluations, and resources. Training programs from the “trades” outside of lab animal, but related to the cage wash environment such as plumbing, electricity, and robotics are included. Case studies and a glossary applying to cage wash operations are presented in appendices. Importantly, there is a section to assist cage wash personnel in using this book as a training manual, which might someday lead to a recognized program of knowledge and skill sets.
