原始摘要(英文原文)· Original abstract
Abstract This chapter explains the transition in legal responsibilities and rights when young autistic adults (YAAs) reach adulthood, emphasizing their autonomy, privacy under the Family and Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA), and protection under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). It outlines how FERPA transfers educational rights from parents to the student at age 18, requiring student consent for information access, while the ADA ensures equal access and participation in education, employment, and public life. The chapter examines employment considerations, including reasonable workplace accommodations, underemployment challenges, and the importance of aligning job options with individual abilities, interests, and sensory needs. It also highlights the significance of preparation over protection, emergency planning, and maintaining comprehensive documentation to support services and accommodations. Finally, the chapter underscores that accommodations remain individualized, disclosure of disability stays a personal choice, and empowering the YAA promotes independence and long-term success.
