May-Thurner Syndrome secondary to the oral contraceptive pill.

PRESENTATION: A teenaged female patient presented with left leg pain and swelling for two days. The pain radiated to the left iliac fossa and suprapubic region. DIAGNOSIS: May Thurner Syndrome with extensive left leg deep venous thrombosis (DVT). TREATMENT: Patient was initially treated with anticoagulants followed by thrombectomy and stenting. DISCUSSION: May-Thurner Syndrome (MTS) is a condition when left iliac vein is compressed by right common iliac artery over the underlying vertebral body. This significantly decreases blood drainage from the left iliac vein causing DVT. Anticoagulation and endovascular intervention are the recommended treatment of choice.
