Objective: Missed nursing care (MNC) is a global quality issue that puts patient safety at risk. It should be examined in the context of healthcare systems structure and nurse workforce resources. The aim of this study is to examine the MNC needs and reasons. Method: This quantitative, cross-sectional study was carried out with 356 nurses from medical and surgical inpatient units at 2 major public university hospitals in Türkiye. The data were collected with the Nurse Information Form and MISSCARE Survey between December 2020 and December 2021. Results: The MISSCARE Survey total mean score was 1.48 ± 0.56. The MNC element with the highest scores was “emotional support to patient and/or family” while the lowest mean score was for “setting up meals for patients who feed themselves.” Missed nursing care reasons total mean score was 3.29 ± 0.59. The reason with the highest mean score was “inadequate number of staff.” Conclusion: The study suggests that MNC should be addressed as a workforce, safety, and quality issue. Implementing sustainable policies with an inclusive understanding of this nurse workforce issue may help solve the problem of MNC.
