The soul is a divine energy operating within the human body. Even after the death of our physical body, the soul remains indestructible, preserving its essence to continue forever. As an embodiment of the divine, this soul conquers death and possesses an eternal nature, functioning in union with supreme divine power. Across global religious and philosophical traditions, the soul is viewed as the fundamental core of living beings. Such understandings of the soul and funerary rites were deeply rooted in ancient Tamil society as well. Classical Tamil literature extensively documents the beliefs of Tamils regarding final rites and the soul. The objective of this article is to explore and reveal the theories held by ancient Tamils concerning the souls of the departed through the poems of Agananuru, one of the Ettuthokai anthologies.
