CLIMATE-DRIVEN FLOODS AND THE FRAGILITY OF PAKISTAN’S AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD SYSTEMS

原始摘要(英文原文)· Original abstract
Floods are among the most frequent and devastating natural disasters in Pakistan, consistently disrupting rural livelihoods and jeopardizing national food security. This review synthesizes literature, government documents, and international agency reports to assess the agricultural consequences of major flood events, with emphasis on 2010, 2022, and 2025.The analysis highlights severe losses to crop production, where millions of acres of farmland were submerged and harvests destroyed, and to livestock systems, where widespread mortality reduced both household nutrition and farm productivity.Post-harvest losses and supply chain disruptions further compounded food scarcity.Flooding accelerates soil degradation via waterlogging, erosion, and salinization, diminishing long term agricultural capacity. These impacts undermine all four pillars of food security, availability through yield losses, access through declining incomes and rising prices, utilization through reduced nutrition, and stability through recurrent shocks. The review also evaluates institutional and policy responses, including flood-control infrastructure, relief programs, and crop insurance schemes, noting persistent implementation gaps.It concludes that building flood-resilient, climate-smart agriculture, supported by stronger disaster preparedness, robust infrastructure, and adaptive farming practices, is essential to protect rural livelihoods and ensure Pakistan's food security in the face of recurring climate extremes.
