The beginning of the 20th century was a period of deep economic crisis in Spain. 1898 went down in history as the year in which the last colonies in the Atlantic and the Pacific were lost. From 1898 to 1910, Spain experienced several governments under the regency of María Cristina and the reign of Alfonso XIII. It was a time of alternating political parties and ongoing clientelist practices. This project will analyze which influences from other foreign territories can be perceived in the Spanish press from 1898 to 1910. For the preparation of this project, we have carried out a content analysis of newspaper advertising in ABC (founded in 1903) and La Vanguardia from 1898 to 1910, examining which territories enjoyed influence in Spain during that decade, and what percentage of print advertising referred to other countries, cities, and cultures.
