Subjective dimensions of community participation following stroke: A qualitative approach.

Limited understanding of subjective dimensions of community participation remains a key gap in post-stroke rehabilitation. Therefore, it is of interest to explore lived experiences of 30 stroke survivors using cognitive interviews. Findings revealed reduced participation is mainly due to dependence, low self-efficacy and environmental barriers. Perceived social support and positive outcome expectations were identified as important facilitators of participation. Thus, we show the integration of subjective, patient-reported perspectives into rehabilitation assessment and intervention frameworks.
