How do intragroup processes shape the quality of peer support for stroke survivors? A qualitative interview study.

Stroke support groups have been shown to help survivors recover and cope with the socioemotional sequalae of stroke. Social group processes supporting connectedness and engagement are key to the beneficial effects of these groups, but less is known about how they are operationalized in stroke support groups. This study explores participant experiences of stroke support groups and how group processes enable the benefits of participation to be realized. Semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom with 12 stroke survivors - including people with aphasia - and two carers, who attended hybrid delivery or online support groups. Thematic analysis was used to develop themes from the data. Three themes and four sub-themes were constructed, (1) recovering together, (2) meaningful participation, with subthemes "leaders as enablers of meaningful participation," and "anticipating each other's needs," and (3) a place for belonging, with subthemes "developing connection through and beyond stroke identity" and "creating the conditions for belonging through commitment." Findings are used to inform recommendations to support group leaders to facilitate connectedness and engagement amongst group members. Future research should explore how to overcome the barriers that impede group processes in online groups in order to optimize their potential.
