The Unfixing is a very personal documentary that explores the filmmaker's, (Nicole Bentancourt) illness, her family's history of trauma and disease, and the ways these experiences shape her relationship with nature. Through intimate storytelling, the film draws connections between personal healing, generational trauma, and the broader environmental crisis, showing us the viewer, how the health of individuals, families, and the planet are interconnected. Betancourt documents her life as she struggles with an unknown illness possibly triggered by a surfing accident, while learning shortly thereafter that her daughter has also been diagnosed with a condition that shares many of the same symptoms. As she reflects on her father's death from AIDS decades earlier and the parallels between their experiences, she expands the focus of the film to explore the environment drawing moving connections between her family's physical suffering and the environmental crises affecting the planet. The visuals are beautiful, and the film blends what feels like an art piece, a family home movie, and a traditional documentary into a cohesive viewing experience. The Unfixing embraces a slow, thoughtful pace that may not appeal to viewers expecting a more traditional documentary. At times the film feels bleak and dire, but eventually becomes hopeful, but something worthwhile to note if shown to a class. For classroom use, this film is best viewed in shorter segments to allow for discussion of its themes and layered narrative. It is recommended for courses in environmental studies, environmental justice, sociology, health, and documentary or film studies.
