Cross-Cultural Transitions in Doctoral Contexts

While socialisation is a pertinent aspect of the doctoral experience, the intertwined implications of socialisation and intercultural interactions have received little attention in research. For many academics who work closely with international peers, intercultural interaction is highly relevant. Drawing upon a framework for understanding what may underpin the quality of the international doctoral experience, this chapter aims to make visible the inherent possibilities, challenges and uncertainties embedded in the doctoral journey. Understanding the intertwined nature of doctoral socialisation and cross-cultural transition can help improve the quality of the doctoral experience, including well-being, and enable more effective management of that transition.
