Having earlier argued that the term ‘mid-career’ is no longer fit-for-purpose given changing times and shifts in career patterns to more self-authored ones, this chapter, a systematic review of ‘mid-career’ studies published in the last 10 years, expands this argument. The analysis confirmed this stance and expanded on it. Of note was a lack of consistent definition of mid-career, with the criteria used varying considerably – thus, it was a common term, but elusive concept. The implications of this conclusion for both research and development are explored.
