DIVERSITY OF BEHAVIORS IN UNIVERSITY EXTENDED LEARNING COMMONS

Learning Commons in Japanese universities are evolving from spaces co-located within libraries to new and diverse forms, which we define as Extended Learning Commons. Based on a field survey conducted in 2025, we collected behavioral data from 9,734 students on 28 floors across 12 facilities in 10 universities. To quantitatively understand students’ actual usage, we analyzed the data in terms of time trend, group size, and behavioral characteristics. As a result, five distinctive behavioral patterns and their spatial characteristics were identified.
