The Role of Fisheries Sector in The Economy of Bontang City

Bontang City is a coastal city in East Kalimantan Province with significant fisheries and marine potential. Its marine ecosystems include mangrove forests, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and diverse marine biodiversity. This study aims to examine the role of the fisheries sector in the economic structure of Bontang City during the period 2016–2025. The data were analyzed using the Location Quotient (LQ) method. The results indicate that, during the 2016–2025 period, the fisheries sector has not yet become a basic sector in the economy of Bontang City. The LQ values ranged from 0.54 to 0.71, indicating that although the sector experienced income growth, its contribution to the regional economy of Bontang City remains relatively limited.
