Methods of correcting students' mistakes when learning English in a non-linguistic university

The purpose of the study is to develop a methodology for correcting the mistakes of students of a non-linguistic university when learning English from a teacher and students. The article reveals the main aspects of the problem of error correction, in particular, terminology issues in the research of foreign and domestic methodologists, types and causes of errors, methods of correcting student errors on the part of the teacher, as well as the possibilities and limitations of mutual verification. The scientific novelty of the research consists in identifying the features of the process of correcting students' mistakes, namely the importance of taking into account the causes, types of errors, goals of the learning situation, the level of students' proficiency in a foreign language, the dependence of the choice of time and method of correction on these factors. As a result of the research, based on the analysis of survey data conducted for undergraduate students studying in various fields of study, a method of error correction for students studying English has been developed and tested, which consists of three stages (preliminary, activity-based, evaluative-reflective), and some general recommendations for teachers on students’ error correction in the process of learning a foreign language are proposed.
