Exploring Traditional Business Rituals in Rural Bangladesh: Reviving Halkhata as Cultural Heritage

This study examines the transformation of Halkhata, a traditional Bengali year-opening business ritual associated with Pohela Boishakh. Originating in 1584 AD under Mughal Emperor Akbar with the introduction of the Bengali calendar, Halkhata has functioned as both an economic and cultural festival. Using qualitative methods, including interviews with traders, customers, and key informants, the study explores generational differences, socio-cultural values, and institutional interventions shaping the practice. Findings reveal a pronounced intergenerational divide: older businessmen and senior customers perceive Halkhata as a moral, cultural, and communal ritual that reinforces trust, reciprocity, and community bonding, while younger traders and customers increasingly engage through digital transactions, social media, and convenience-driven practices. This shift reflects broader influences of urbanization, technological adoption, and exposure to Westernized leisure cultures, which have weakened the emotional and symbolic significance of the ritual. The study also identifies political and religious dynamics as critical factors, noting that Islamic political movements have at times marginalized traditional Hindu-influenced practices in public spaces, contributing to selective celebration of Halkhata in contemporary urban bazaars. Despite these challenges, both older stakeholders and experts emphasize the potential for revitalization through adaptive strategies, such as digital promotion, community-level fairs, and institutional support, ensuring continuity while preserving cultural essence. The findings underscore the tension between heritage preservation and modernization, highlighting the need for culturally sensitive interventions that engage youth without diluting the ritual’s symbolic and social significance. This study contributes to understanding how traditional business rituals adapt to contemporary socio-economic, technological, and political contexts, offering insights for heritage management, cultural policy, and intergenerational knowledge transmission.
