Roadmap for Scaling and Sustaining Design Based Learning

This final chapter takes departure as both theme and method. The process of bringing DBL to life reflects that innovation often begins in discomfort: in stepping beyond the boundaries of comfort zones, institutional traditions and educational routines. Reflecting on the previous chapters, we look back on our journey and what was learned about designing and implementing DBL at the Hotel Management School Leeuwarden (HMSL). We learned that each movement away from established norms has opened windows and spaces for new approaches to teaching and learning, providing gestures toward what still lies ahead. Therefore, departure encompasses the past, present and future. This chapter serves as a roadmap for scaling and sustaining DBL as a living, evolving practice within hospitality education. It calls hospitality students, educators and practitioners to keep moving toward the next steps in DBL.
