Introduction: Digital preservation is a central element in ensuring continuous access, authenticity, and integrity of the scientific heritage maintained by institutional repositories. In Brazil, despite advances in the consolidation of interoperable repositories and open access policies, regulatory gaps related to long-term digital preservation still persist. Objective: To analyze institutional policies, national regulations, and recent scientific literature on digital preservation applied to Brazilian institutional repositories, and institutions that are partners of the Cariniana Network. Methodology: This study adopts a descriptive research design with a qualitative approach, based on documental and bibliographic analysis, emphasizing the digital preservation policies implemented by institutions affiliated with the Cariniana Network of the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT). Results: The findings indicate that only a limited number of institutions have formal, comprehensive, and publicly accessible digital preservation policies. In this context, the Digital Preservation Policy of the Cariniana Network, coordinated by IBICT, stands out as a guiding model to support institutions in the development of their own policies. Conclusion: It is concluded that strengthening digital preservation governance in Brazil depends on the formalization of institutional policies aligned with international standards and current national regulations, in order to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of scientific digital objects.
