Communication

Communication is the main purpose of a musical performance; however, it is not included in the notation itself. Previous chapters have shown that notation alone cannot determine the nature of a performance. Therefore, notation offers a framework for communication only to a limited extent. In this penultimate part of the book, we will explore aspects of the musician&s;s choices and expressive qualities. An expansion of the communication model introduced in 1.3 will also be presented to help clarify where different arguments in the critique of a performance belong. Finally, a summary of musical communication will be provided, outlining how musicians can use their artistic intelligence in communication situations.
