As shown in the Introduction, an encounter between a musician and the notation of a musical piece triggers several processes and raises many questions beyond simply decoding the notes. Before offering a more detailed analysis of the notation in the next chapter, it is worthwhile to briefly consider some of the issues that emerge and serve as a backdrop for a musician developing an interpretation of the musical work.
