Fiber Waveguides

This chapter considers cylindrical waveguides such as optical fibers. The equations are derived for the fields and mode indices associated with a core and multiple concentric claddings. Optical coupling for a focused beam into a fiber is discussed using overlap integrals. The far field radiation from the end face of a fiber, including angled end faces, is calculated. Graded index fibers are discussed. Examples include SMF-28 single mode step-index fiber, multi-mode fiber, Airy mode coupling fiber, and W-index fiber.
