This chapter derives the equations for the fields associated with propagation in planar waveguides. The transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes are derived. Mode indices, field amplitudes and Poynting vector are obtained. Examples considered include symmetric and asymmetric waveguides, surface plasmons, multichannel waveguides, and the planar solid immersion mirror.
