The world energy industry is experiencing a severe shift due to increased energy consumption, the need to reduce climate change, and the increased interest in energy security and sustainability. This chapter gives a detailed summary of energy issues to date and analyzes the structural, environmental, economic, and geopolitical spillover impediments that obstruct a swift move out of the fossil fuel based systems. The focus is on the rapid implementation of renewable energy technologies, especially solar, wind, hydropower, and new bioenergy, and how they can decarbonize power systems with the effect of economic growth and energy access. The chapter notes how artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization can bring about the transformative value of supporting smart grids, advanced energy storage, predictive analytics, and optimized energy management across the system. The main policy, financial, and technological enablers to make large-scale renewable integration possible are also discussed in a key way, and the social and institutional issues related to a just and equitable transition are also discussed. The synthesis of the global trends, technological innovations, and policy frameworks in this chapter provides the background context for understanding the synergy between AI and renewable energy systems. It preconditions further chapters by defining the directions to resilient and intelligent energy ecosystems with low carbon levels in accordance with the global climate targets and sustainable development criteria.
