Getting Ready

Abstract This chapter focuses on preparing the young autistic adult (YAA) for effective problem-solving by emphasizing the attitudes and strategies that foster productive outcomes. It outlines how the YAA learns and applies the essential steps of the problem-solving process to an identified goal. The chapter also encourages the development of a positive attitude toward addressing challenges and highlights collaborative planning for the first immersion experience with the provider. Additionally, it guides supporters to reinforce the YAA’s learning by discussing the ADAPT model, reviewing the Promoting Independence materials, exploring the importance of attitude, and promoting independence. Finally, the chapter underscores the significance of recognizing the YAA’s effort and progress as essential to building confidence and sustaining engagement in problem- solving.
