Reconceptualising game understanding in youth football: implications for applied research and practice.

Game understanding is a fundamental part of performance development in youth football. Currently, however, the concept is inconsistently defined and operationalised across research and coaching contexts, leading to theoretical confusion, inconsistent research methods and practical problems when designing optimum applied learning environments. Accordingly, the aim of this article is to offer a conceptual framework through which game understanding in youth football can be interpreted moving forward. Specifically, we argue that game understanding is usefully explained through the integration of literature concerning contextual priors and transfer of understanding within a newly adopted framework by sport science researchers called predictive processing. This framework provides a nuanced explanation of how players anticipate, adjust and reorganise their decisions against constantly changing game situations and demands. Building on existing cognitive and metacognitive perspectives of game understanding, predictive processing offers a coherent framework for organising, interpreting and operationalising these ideas in youth football. We advocate that, instead of following fixed playing solutions or relying on spontaneous reactions to perceptions, football players' understanding informs their actions depending on their expectations, established reasoning and ability to adapt as game conditions and situations change. This view suggests that effectiveness depends on the combination of engagement/experience with information prior to the game through planning/preparation activities and that which becomes available during play itself.
