Among the myriad joining techniques, adhesive bonding is an effective method for fibre-reinforced polymeric composites, which are widely used in aerospace, aircraft, and marine applications. Adhesive bonding strength depends on the type of adhesive, adhesive thickness, the type of adherends, curing conditions, joint design, environmental conditions and fabrication techniques. This review article investigates these input factors and presents numerous improvement techniques that have increased bonding strength in adhesive-bonded joints, including geometric modifications, adhesive modifications, bonding surface modifications, bonding methods, and hybrid approaches. Moreover, this review article discusses the bonding behaviours and failure mechanisms of adhesive-bonded joints, based on the latest research. From this consolidation of numerous articles, the researchers can identify and optimise the appropriate bonding-strength improvement techniques for the right applications. This review article opens a new avenue for the creation of innovative designs, adhesive compositions, adherend modifications, and hybrid joining methods. In the future, to develop the high-bonding-strength adhesive-bonded joint in composite structural applications using the identified research gap from this literature survey.
