How uniquely flexible is the human institutional stance, and what is it for?

What aspects of the "institutional stance" are really unique to humans? We argue that some animals are more flexible than described, and that humans are less flexible than assumed. We finally suggest that attention to the possible functions of different institutions suggests many possible commonalities between humans and animals.
