This chapter examines how transformations in the built environment, along with efforts to green cities, contribute to reducing urban heat stress, balancing the carbon cycle, and lowering air and water pollution. It emphasizes the benefits and trade-offs of compact versus sprawling city layouts. The highlighted strategies for reshaping the built environment also include sustainable urban design, including eco-friendly building materials. The role of urban vegetation is discussed in terms of climate adaptation, biodiversity support, and pollutant reduction, with a focus on tailoring greening efforts to local climatic conditions. The text underscores that while urban vegetation contributes to environmental quality, it cannot replace direct pollution source control, advocating for integrated, climate-sensitive urban planning to create healthier, more resilient cities.
