Chapter 2 examines motivation as the foundational driver of consumer behavior, showing how needs initiate and sustain consumption. It surveys major theories of needs, such as Maslow’s hierarchy, to explain a process in which unfulfilled needs create tension, trigger goal formation, and guide behaviors to buy and consume, while marketing often amplifies this cycle into insatiability, with ever new or higher needs. In contrast, the chapter introduces authentic needs, realized through mindfulness, that are inherently self-fulfilling and foster a steadier sense of contentment. They also encourage deeper engagement, where consumption becomes an opportunity for full awareness of self and surroundings, leading to a transformative experience that illuminates the transient nature of possessions, status, and emotions, thereby loosening the compulsion to chase more and opening space for a freer, more sufficient relationship to consumption.
