A 2022 article in Nature proclaimed the possibility of "Taking the tripping out of psychedelic medicine," highlighting efforts to engineer medically-compliant designer psychedelics purportedly delivering mental health benefits without inducing subjective experiences. Such developments have since initiated a new mainstream in the pharmaceuticalization and commodification of psychedelics. These so-called 'psychoplastogens' streamline drugs to maximize scalability, standardization, and compatibility with medical and economic infrastructures. Yet stripping psychedelics of their phenomenological core, risks eliminating their most transformative therapeutic and societal effects. Drawing on 'ecodelics,' i.e., psychedelics understood as agents of relational and ecological attunement, we assess biochemical reductionist framings of psychedelic medicine, foregrounding the crucial role of set, setting, and social context (matrix). The pharmaceuticalization of psychedelics risks narrowing these substances to individualized biochemical interventions, sidelining the relational, ecological, and transformative dimensions through which they exert their broader therapeutic and societal benefits. Psychedelics' capacity to foster connectedness - to self, community, and nature - cannot be engineered out without consequence. We argue that the pharmaceutical turn in psychedelic science, while motivated by scalability and safety (and profit), indicates a deeper category error: treating subjective experience as pathological noise rather than as the principal mechanism of action. We argue for reintegrating psychedelics into relational, communal, and ecologically attuned practices, recognizing psychedelics not merely as isolated pharmacological agents but as non-specific amplifiers of experience dependent on social and ecological reinforcing scaffolding. If psychedelics are co-opted to sustain unsustainable systems, their emancipatory potential risks being lost at a moment when it is most urgently needed.
