Building Trust in Maternal-Fetal Medicine: Reflections on the Art of the Clinical Encounter.

Every Maternal-Fetal Medicine consultation begins with a question that is rarely spoken aloud: Can I trust you? Before patients evaluate our knowledge, or consider our recommendations, they decide whether they believe we will listen, understand, and guide them with honesty and compassion. (1-4) Across our combined careers in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Pediatric Anesthesiology, we have come to appreciate that trust is the foundation of every meaningful clinical relationship. Scientific knowledge and technical expertise are indispensable (the science), but they are most effective when coupled with presence, curiosity, humility, and genuine human connection (the art). In this Personal Perspective, we reflect on lessons our patients have taught us over decades of caring for women, children, and families during some of life's most vulnerable moments. As medicine continues to advance through innovations in imaging, genetics, and precision medicine, we believe the art of the clinical encounter remains one of our greatest responsibilities, and one of our greatest privileges. Every patient deserves the very best of our science and the very best of our humanity.
