An IS Scholar Construct Development Debate Professional Development Symposia (PDS)

The framework for business communication transparency is new. To further develop this framework, this symposium setting for information systems (IS) scholars is a venue ripe for a survey instrument development process to assess the validity of the framework’s constructs. Specifically, to consider the lawful existence of items judiciously selected from extant literature to adopt, adapt, newly create, or spontaneously develop items for transparency constructs. Even if existing measurement items are judiciously selected from the literature for this effort, issues such as modern language and the measurement of a legitimate relationship, among others, may mask the research results (Converse & Presser, 1986). The components used to operationalize transparency derive from the deductive method of construct development (cf. Clark & Watson, 1995; Hinkin, 1995). The development process begins with a description of the conceptualized model. Thus, in developing a construct for transparency in communication, the construct is defined as the permitted passage of information. The passage of information is measured through a set of qualitative characteristics established to understand the influence and direction of significance in the following measurement items. The method approach in this work includes five steps: construct validation, measurement item pool, iterative review process, construct construction, and instrument test.
