A Perspective on Integrative Oncology in India: Survival Conversations, Multidisciplinary Collaboration, and Healing Environments.

INTRODUCTION: Integrative oncology combines conventional cancer treatments with evidence-based complementary therapies to address the multidimensional needs of cancer patients. While existing literature largely focuses on therapeutic interventions and clinical outcomes, limited attention has been given to the lived experiences and professional realities of integrative oncology practitioners, particularly within the Indian healthcare context. OBJECTIVE: This perspective paper aims to explore practical, emotional, and interdisciplinary dimensions of practicing integrative oncology, while emphasizing patient communication, multidisciplinary collaboration, and healing-centered clinical environments. DISCUSSION: Practitioners in integrative oncology function at the intersection of biomedical science, supportive care, and patient-centered communication. Beyond managing symptoms and treatment-related toxicities, clinicians frequently engage with patients' existential concerns, prognostic uncertainties, emotional distress, and hopes for healing. The paper discusses three interconnected domains: (1) navigating complex conversations related to suffering, meaning, prognosis, and uncertainty; (2) working within multidisciplinary oncology ecosystems that may include differing perspectives regarding complementary therapies; and (3) cultivating healing-oriented clinical environments that support psychological resilience, trust, dignity, and overall well-being. Drawing from experiential insights in an integrative oncology setting in India, the paper highlights both the opportunities and challenges involved in delivering holistic and compassionate cancer care. CONCLUSION: Integrative oncology extends beyond the integration of therapies, encompassing the integration of communication, empathy, multidisciplinary collaboration, and healing-centered care practices. Recognizing the human dimensions of oncology practice may contribute to more compassionate, patient-centered, and psychologically supportive cancer care models. This perspective underscores the importance of fostering interdisciplinary understanding and holistic care approaches in contemporary oncology practice.
