Hyperemesis Gravidarum and the Genetics of Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF-15): A Case Report.

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), the extreme form of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, significantly impacts the quality of life of a subset of pregnant individuals, leading to hospitalization and severe health complications. Despite the prevalence and intensity of HG, therapeutic approaches remain largely palliative, focusing on symptom management without addressing the underlying pathophysiology. This report delineates a case of severe HG in a 31-year-old woman, highlighting the complexity of diagnosis and management, and discusses the potential of growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) as a therapeutic target. GDF-15, a biomarker linked to placental development and appetite regulation, emerges as a promising avenue for understanding and potentially treating HG. By exploring GDF-15's role in HG, this case report emphasizes the need for further research into the genetic and biological mechanisms underlying HG. Additional research on HG may facilitate the development of improved management strategies that are both effective for the mother and safe for the fetus.
