Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a multitude of chronic inflammatory conditions that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. These disorders, which primarily include Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), can significantly impact an individual's quality of life due to their persistent and usually unpredictable presentations. The current biomarkers and treatments that are available have their limitations, and therefore, it is important that novel treatments and new biomarkers are readily being researched in order to help improve the quality of life of patients as well as to reduce the financial burden of treatment on the National Health Service (NHS). This essay will look into the biomarkers and novel treatments used in the diagnosis and management of IBD in adult patients.
