Communication support for older adults with age-related hearing loss in acute care settings.

Age-related hearing loss is frequently overlooked in acute care settings despite its negative effects on communication, care experience and patient safety. This literature review synthesises recent evidence on interventions, practices and approaches relevant to supporting older adults with age-related hearing loss in acute care settings. Five recurring areas were identified: recognition of hearing-related communication needs; assistive hearing technology and broader hearing support; staff preparedness and education; adapted communication strategies; and visibility of hearing-related communication needs. There are several practical approaches that can improve communication support for older adults with hearing loss, which should be a core component of safe and effective nursing practice.
