Understanding and advancing nurse prescribing in social care.

BACKGROUND: Non-medical prescribing (NMP) is a relatively new and underutilised addition in social care nursing settings. AIM: To gather insights from prescribers and stakeholders regarding the implementation of NMP in social care organisations. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five prescribers and a stakeholder with experience of NMP in social care settings across England. Data were generated and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. ANALYSIS: Four themes were constructed; working in collaboration; demonstrating the impact of NMP; constructing professional identity; and preparing the path forward. CONCLUSION: Prescribing in social care is poised for rapid expansion. However, new models of working and robust leadership are essential to foster interorganisational connectivity, provide appropriate support, and establish the infrastructure required for effective service delivery.
