Melasma is characterized by the appearance of skin patches caused by hyperpigmentation. It commonly affects the face but may also occur in other areas of the body, such as the arms, neck, and upper chest. It can be caused by hormonal dysfunction, the use of medications such as contraceptives and hormone replacement drugs, pregnancy, genetic predisposition, and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Microneedling is an aesthetic procedure that can be performed using two devices: a roller or a manual microneedling pen known as a Dermapen. Both devices induce an inflammatory process that promotes skin regeneration and are widely used in the treatment of melasma. This study aims to contribute to dermatological and aesthetic nursing by identifying favorable and unfavorable factors associated with the use of this technique. This is a descriptive literature review conducted between December 2022 and March 2023. The PubMed and SciELO electronic databases were searched. Twelve scientific articles were selected, and those that met the inclusion criteria are presented in a table as the study results. It was concluded that the technique has more positive aspects supporting its use than negative ones. However, future approaches may contribute to this topic by presenting observations and experiences from nurses specializing in this practice.
