Next-Generation Irrigation Strategies: Enhancing Water Productivity in Crops under Changing Climates
原始摘要(英文原文)· Original abstract
Water scarcity and climate volatility are increasingly constraining global agricultural productivity. As the largest consumer of freshwater, agriculture must urgently transition from conventional irrigation to precision, adaptive, and sustainable systems. This review synthesizes emerging trends and innovations in irrigation technologies and strategies that aim to enhance crop water productivity under changing climates. It compares traditional irrigation methods with modern systems such as drip, subsurface drip, and micro-sprinkler irrigation, examining their efficiency, scalability, and limitations.Next-generation irrigation technologies-including sensor-based platforms, IoT integration, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and UAV-assisted water monitoring-are evaluated for their capacity to enable real-time, site-specific water management. In parallel, the review explores climate-smart irrigation strategies such as deficit irrigation, regulated deficit irrigation, partial root-zone drying, and supplemental irrigation, focusing on their physiological basis, water-saving potential, and suitability for water-stressed environments.Findings reveal that while technical innovations can significantly improve water productivity, adoption remains constrained by socioeconomic, institutional, and informational barriers. The article concludes by identifying future priorities in research, policy, and capacity building-emphasizing the need for systems integration, inclusive design, and a paradigm shift from input-intensive to intelligence-intensive irrigation services. These transitions are essential to enhance resilience, equity, and efficiency in agriculture's response to the growing water crisis.
