原始摘要(英文原文)· Original abstract
Atlas, J. (Director). Pines, D., et al. (Executive Producer). (2026). The M Factor 2: Before the Pause. Video Project. 55 mins. Jacoba Atlas’ The M Factor 2: Before the Pause aims to demystify the largely unacknowledged transitional phase preceding menopause known as perimenopause. While experienced by half the population, health care providers receive shockingly little (if any) specialized training regarding this stage of life. The film features interviews with medical providers and specialists who confirm this glaring gap in women’s healthcare and clinical research. While perimenopause presents life-disrupting symptoms, providers have largely dismissed and mitigated its impact in the past, forcing women to suffer through their symptoms. The M Factor 2: Before the Pause is a quasi-companion to Atlas’ 2024 documentary The M Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause. With a run time of less than an hour, The M Factor 2: Before the Pause provides an informative baseline of perimenopause knowledge including symptoms ranging from neurological struggles to physical and mental health strains. The film also details current symptom management options that have previously been denied or discouraged. The medical community, from students to seasoned practitioners as well as those outside the profession, will benefit from the film’s matter-of-fact delivery and science-backed research to increase awareness, empathy, and support of patients, friends, and loved ones experiencing this life transition. Women themselves will likely find The M Factor 2: Before the Pause equal parts informative and validating. The film justly credits social media’s role in kickstarting the conversation surrounding perimenopause which in turn has forced many medical practitioners to increase their own knowledge of this often-overlooked aspect of women’s health. While interviewees present a largely optimistic view of AI’s future in perimenopause research that may give some viewers pause, the data bias drawbacks are acknowledged. The M Factor 2: Before the Pause also dispels decades-long misinformation pertaining to the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for perimenopause symptom management. Once deemed too risky due to poor data collection, HRT is now regarded as a safe and effective option for most women to help manage symptoms of menopause and perimenopause. The film also encourages women to be mindful of potentially serious health issues associated with aging including heart disease and bone density reduction. The M Factor 2: Before the Pause removes the veil of shame surrounding women’s health and advocates for a higher quality of healthcare and life which women have been denied for too long. This film is recommended. Awards won include: Best Short Documentary, Pan African Film Festival Diamon Globe Award, International New York Film Festival
