Kritik Sosial dalam Novel Kado Terbaik Karya J.S. Khairen

This study examines the forms of social criticism presented in the novel Kado Terbaik by J.S. Khairen, which reflects various social issues that continue to exist in contemporary Indonesian society. Using a descriptive qualitative method with a sociology of literature approach, this research analyzes excerpts from the 2022 novel containing elements of social criticism. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal seven forms of social criticism, including poverty (2 instances), crime (3), family disorganization (3), youth-related issues (3), and violations of social norms (2), population issues (1), and bureaucratic problems (1). These findings demonstrate that the novel functions not only as a literary work but also as a medium for conveying criticism of persistent social realities. Through its narrative, Kado Terbaik portrays social conditions experienced by different groups within society while encouraging readers to reflect on existing social problems. The study concludes that the novel effectively represents social realities and highlights the important role of literature as a medium for social reflection, criticism, and public awareness regarding issues that remain relevant in contemporary society.
